Koala sleeping in a tree

The City is delivering a koala food and habitat tree planting in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to offset the impacts of tree removal from the M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade between Varsity Lakes and Tugun.

Planting is occurring within priority areas of Eddie Kornhauser Reserve.

Eddie Kornhauser Reserve is part of a known koala corridor with regular sightings of healthy koalas within the park.

The project will see koala food and habitat trees planted to offset the impacts of tree removal from the M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade between Varsity Lakes and Tugun.

Project information

  • Planting of approximately 14,000 koala habitat trees
  • Ongoing maintenance and assisted restoration (weed control) of existing vegetation and planting areas.

Benefits

  • An increase in the number of koala food tree and habitat trees within the park
  • Improved koala habitat and connectivity through the park
  • Restoration of endemic plant communities
  • Improved amenity through tree planting and weed control.

Impacts

Park users won't be greatly impacted by this work. Track works, revegetation and weed control commenced in June 2020 and will be ongoing for the lifespan of the project.

Please be aware of any temporary signage or track exclusions when you visit the park.

Report your koala sightings

If you see a koala – whether it's healthy, sick, injured or deceased – report your sighting. Your report will provide us with valuable information about koala distribution and habitat. It also helps our conservation planning at this site and right across the Gold Coast.
