Greenheart masterplan

Greenheart is a new destination parkland nestled between the city’s beaches and hinterland.

Greenheart's scale, location, unique environment and cultural heritage will ensure that it is a place of major significance to South East Queensland. It will be the largest open space and recreational facility project we have ever undertaken.

Background

Greenheart is a 257.5-hectare site located in the suburbs of Merrimac and Robina. It is an important opportunity for us to provide much needed open space and recreation facilities as a direct response to the Gold Coast's population growth.

The site is approximately six times the size of Broadwater Parklands and nearly two thirds the size of New York's Central Park.

Greenheart will be transformed into a destination of immense natural beauty with a contemporary design. Once complete, the community will come here to enjoy events and cultural celebrations, participate in sports and connect with nature.

This information presents the potential features delivered with the Greenheart site. The assets and areas are indicative only and subject to funding and budget approvals, agreements between various stakeholders and timing of works. Features will be delivered over multiple stages.

The Masterplan

There are three primary precincts where major facilities will be located:

  • Sports precinct
  • Event quarter
  • Discovery hub

Five secondary precincts will enhance the existing site characteristics:

  • Community park
  • Ephemeral wetlands
  • Mudgeeraba Creek
  • Big and Little Woody Hills
  • Wildlife corridor

The precincts will be linked by 30 kilometres of walking paths and bike trails, green bridges, a series of elevated viewing towers and wayfinding and interpretive signage.

Environment

Greenheart has the potential to enhance the ecology and environmental value of the Gold Coast for future generations. We will be renewing over 30 hectares of habitat and feeding grounds for birds and other wildlife

Visitors will be able to experience the woodlands, wetlands and creek edges with walking trails, boardwalks, pontoons, bird hides and interpretive signage provided throughout the parklands.

Cultural heritage

Greenheart has a diverse and rich history. The project aims to retain, protect, and celebrate the indigenous cultural significance of Big and Little Woody Hills.

European heritage could be expressed through the retention of existing drainage lines that are reminiscent of the agricultural history of the site.

Sport

Over the next 20 years, the city’s population is expected to reach over one million residents. As our population grows, the demand on grassroots sports will increase dramatically.

Greenheart will allow for the expansion of local sports organisations, across different codes.

The site can cater for 4000 players on any given weekend and provide ample spectator seating and carparking for locals and visitors during competitions and events.

Events

The Event Quarter will be geared towards holding social and family gatherings, community events and major concerts.

A large event lawn will enable the city to host events that could draw crowds of up to 50,000 people and will have the ability to put the Gold Coast on the international touring circuit.

We will collaborate with the event industry to design facilities that are purpose built for major events to deliver quality industry and audience experiences.

Greenheart benefits

Economic

During construction, it is projected that over 1000 jobs will be created, with ongoing employment opportunities in the running of the parkland including:

  • Site maintenance
  • Parkland management
  • On site cafés and restaurants,
  • Information kiosks and watercraft and bike hire

Event and tourism industry

Through its event programming, sports participation and natural offerings, it is expected that Greenheart will attract regional and national visitors. By extending their stay, the city will likely benefit from flow on effects including accommodation and dining and other tourism-based activities.

To make it easy to get to and from the site, the Masterplan will provide active travel and integrated public transport options.

Social and cultural

The masterplan will create far-reaching social benefits for the community:

  • Health and fitness for all age groups and abilities
  • Increase in sport participation
  • Family and social gatherings, birthday parties and weddings
  • Potential partnering opportunities with schools and universities
  • School excursion and education programs
  • Volunteering
