The City is upgrading the Pirate Park playground at Palm Beach Parklands. It is one of the most popular playgrounds in the city with its unique and popular pirate ship-themed play area.

Background

Palm Beach Parklands is just one of the many signature parks on the Gold Coast. It provides multiple recreational opportunities, making it a favourite destination for Gold Coast residents and visitors.

After 10 years of popular use, the Pirate Park playground is in need of an upgrade. The City will deliver a new and improved play space destination that can be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.

Project information

The new design will maintain the popular pirate ship theme and provide a variety of different play opportunities and experiences for a range of ages. Key features and upgrades include:

  • increased capacity of play
  • new pirate ship play structure with:
    • climbing nets and ropes
    • suspension bridge
    • telescopes, cannons, interactive panels
    • imaginary play elements
  • ship crow's nest towers with a slide
  • swings
  • flying fox
  • spinning globe
  • large basket swing
  • hammocks
  • sensory play elements.

Timeframe

Construction started in January 2022 and will take approximately 5 months, with completion expected mid-2022.

Construction impacts

During construction the existing playground, adjacent shelters and barbecues will be closed to the public. The Dune Café and remaining parkland, including the public amenities, will not be impacted by construction works.

Signage will be installed on-site to direct pedestrians safely around the site during the construction period.
