Maintenance hole cover

We have an ongoing program to inspect, maintain and replace sewer maintenance holes across the city.

Inspection details

During the inspection a camera is lowered into the maintenance hole to record its condition. If the maintenance hole is located within private property, we will notify affected residents and businesses in advance.

The team will usually take 15 minutes to 30 minutes to undertake an inspection. We may need more than one visit if any defects are identified.

Maintenance and replacement details

  • Clean and remove debris
  • Replace the maintenance hole lids
  • Seal lids to prevent water from entering
  • Apply a new protective coating on the maintenance hole wall

In some situations, we need to replace (rebuild) the maintenance hole. This process can involve:

  • Excavate the area around the maintenance hole
  • Remove the existing lid and damaged concrete sections
  • Install new concrete sections
  • Install and seal a new maintenance hole lid

Community impacts

  • Noise, dust and intermittent odour
  • Changed traffic conditions
  • Changed on-street parking arrangements
  • Temporary footpath closures and diversions
  • Tankering and bypass pumping to temporarily redirect the flow of sewage.

We will do our best to minimise disruption and thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these essential works.

Benefits to the community

  • Protect the environment and community health by preventing groundwater entry and overloading the sewer network
  • Minimise disruption to the sewerage network
