Roadside vending permit

Roadside vending involves a business selling goods or services on public land from a roadside area such as a footway or kerbside. If you want to sell goods or services from a roadside area on the Gold Coast, you need a roadside vending permit. 

You don't need a permit from us if you operate entirely on private property.

Do you need a roadside vending permit?

You need a permit if you:

• operate a mobile vending vehicle such as an ice cream van or smoko van
• sell goods from a temporary roadside stall, trailer or vehicle
• display goods for sale on the footway outside your business.

Roadside vending is not permitted in parks, park car parks or on beaches.

Types of roadside vending

Before you apply

Refer to the roadside vending types and restrictions to check if you may be eligible for a permit.

Submit your application at least 20 business days before you plan to start operating.

Permits are granted following an assessment process. We cannot guarantee your application will be approved.

Required documents

Provide the following documents with your application to avoid processing delays.

All applications

• Public liability insurance certificate of currency for a minimum $20 million
• Details of the goods or services you will sell or provide
• A suitability statement (if you have had a roadside vending permit refused, suspended or cancelled)

Additional documentation

Depending on the type of roadside vending application, you may need to also provide the following documents.

Mobile roadside vending

• Photo of vehicle including make, model and registration details

Stationary roadside vending

• Photo and details of any vending equipment in use, including vehicle, trailer and stall
• Site plan showing the location and setup
• Road corridor permit from the Department of Transport and Main Roads if operating on a state-controlled road

Display of goods on footways

• A footway display plan showing dimensions, layout and required clearances
• Details of display equipment such as racks or stands
• Road corridor permit from the Department of Transport and Main Roads if the display is adjacent to a state-controlled road

Fee and permit period

Mobile and stationary roadside vending

Permit fees are outlined in our Register of Fees and Charges.

You may be eligible for reduced or nil fees if you:

• own, rent or lease a rateable property in the City of Gold Coast
• are a registered charity
• are a voluntary sporting, community, religious or incorporated not-for-profit organisation. 

Display of goods on footways fees

There is no application fee. Ongoing fees apply based on the approved area and are billed monthly in advance from the permit issue date. For fees, refer to our Register of Fees and Charges.
