Carer parking permit

You can apply for a carer parking permit if you are a volunteer or unpaid carer who provides care or assistance to a person who lives in a time-limited parking area.

A carer parking permit allows carers unlimited parking in a time-limited parking area near to the residence, subject to conditions.

To be eligible for a carer parking permit, the carer must not live at the same premises as the person being cared for. Only one carer parking permit can be granted for the residence.

A carer parking permit is for volunteer and unpaid carers who care for a specific individual. Paid carers should apply for a residential care service parking permit.

Note: If you have an existing permit, do not apply for a new one. You can amend your existing permit to update car or contact details. Visit our Amend/cancel a permit page. We will notify you when your permit is due for renewal.

Conditions of use

The conditions of use for carer parking permits are listed on the documentation that comes with your permit.

  1. The permit must be clearly displayed inside the vehicle, attached to the windscreen on the left (passenger) side or placed on the left (passenger) dash.
  2. The permit can only be used while you are actively providing care for the person named in the application at the address listed on the application.
  3. The permit is not valid in a metered space or where parking is prohibited.
  4. The vehicle must be parked near the residence identified in the permit.
  5. The permit is not valid for a long vehicle, motorbike, trailer or heavy vehicle.
  6. The permit must not be copied or reproduced.

Carer parking permits may be renewed annually by way of acknowledgement to the City. They are valid for one calendar year from 1 September to 31 August.

Apply for a permit

To apply for a new carer parking permit, you need to make sure you are eligible.

To be eligible for a carer parking permit, you must:

  • be an unpaid or volunteer carer for a person who lives within a time-limited parking area
  • not live with the person you are caring for (if you do, you may be eligible for a resident parking permit).

Only one carer parking permit will be granted for each residence. If a permit has already been issued to another carer for that residence, your application will not be approved.

If you care for people who live at different addresses, you will need to apply for a permit for each address. A carer parking permit applies to a specific address.
