Koala conservation education program
Please note: The Koala Conservation Education Program teaching resources are being updated and are currently unavailable.
The Koala Conservation Education Program is a school program targeted at local Year 4 and Year 7 students. It is designed to develop students' knowledge of koalas, their habitat and threats, and relevant conservation measures.
The program aims to facilitate learning both in the classroom and in the field. This is facilitated via teaching guides for educators in years 4 and 7 that highlight the relevant Australian Curriculum links. There's Pre-incursion, Incursion and Post-incursion lessons plans and a 'Koala incursion worksheet'.
Key concepts covered in the teacher's guides include:
- koalas are a significant part of Australia's fauna and listed as a vulnerable species under State and Federal Government legislation
- key koala population areas in our city include Elanora and Currumbin Waters, East Coomera, Burleigh Ridge and the hinterland
- the koala population in South East Queensland is declining
- processes in our urban environment pose a threat to the long-term survival of koalas
- conservation measures are in place and the community can contribute to their implementation.
