Each of our cemeteries offers different combinations of burial and memorialisation options.
There are lawn and monumental sites for burials and memorial sites for the placement of cremated remains available for purchase. We are happy to assist you with any special requests relating to cultures, customs, religious beliefs and traditions.
Burial service
Our grave sites can be pre-purchased and burial internment can be pre-paid.
Funeral service
Contact your preferred funeral director to plan for the funeral service and they will book the burial time and day with us. Contact a stonemason for monumental work in our designated cemeteries.
Contact our Cemeteries Administration to:
- order a memorial plaque
- choose the site for burial.
Lawn sections
Lawn sections cater for burials where a monument or a grave surround is not required. A memorial tablet or plaque is placed on the grave site. The remaining grave site surrounds are then turfed and maintained by City staff.
There is to be no ornamentation on the grave or objects fixed to the plaque other than a City-supplied vase.
Lawn beam sections
Southport Lawn
A memorial tablet or plaque is placed on a desk in the beamed section. The remaining gravesite surrounds are turfed and maintained only by the City's cemeteries staff.
Mudgeeraba
A memorial tablet or plaque is placed on a desk in the beamed section. The remaining gravesite surrounds are turfed and maintained only by the City's cemeteries staff.
You can apply for a permit to install a headstone or memorial tablet. An application outlining the proposal of work is to be submitted to the City prior to any installation taking place. A fee as resolved by the City shall be paid on presentation of the submission.
Monumental sections
Standard headstone and grave surrounds can be placed in monumental sections. Above ground vault sites are available at Southport General Cemetery.
Monumental cemeteries
Headstone or monuments in monumental cemeteries may be installed by private arrangement through a monumental mason. A Monument permit application is required to be submitted and approved prior to any work commencing on site.
If a monument is not required a City supplied memorial plaque can be installed on the grave as an alternative.
Natural burials
The Alberton Cemetery offers a natural burial area, providing a unique, dignified and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional interment practices.
The process of natural burial involves the preparation of the body for interment without the use of embalming fluid or chemical preservatives. The remains are placed in a biodegradable coffin, shroud or urn and laid to rest, allowing them to return to the earth naturally. To help create and preserve the environment, traditional headstones are replaced by native plantings at or near the site of interment. Each grave is recorded with GPS locations to allow current and future generations to locate the final resting place of their loved ones.
While there is no physical identification at the grave, families can choose to have a bronze plaque on the communal memorial tree at the entrance to the burial area.
Ash interment services
Memorial sites in a memorial garden or columbarium wall are available for the placement of cremated remains. Wall niches or ashes garden sites can be pre-paid.
Funeral service and ashes interment

Contact our Cemeteries Administration to:
- select an ashes site, for example a wall niche or ashes memorial garden site

Wall niches
Wall niches may be purchased as a single, double or triple site (subject to availability). Ashes are interred in the chosen site and a memorial plaque placed over the site.

Mudgeeraba and Southport Lawn cemeteries have garden areas available for the placement of a memorial plaque, where no interment of ashes is required. Additionally, a request for ashes to be scattered within cemetery grounds is also available.
