Frequently asked questions

What if my bin was not emptied/ I forgot to place it out in time?

This could be for several reasons:

  • the bin was not put out in time (bins should be placed kerbside the night before your collection)
  • the truck could not reach the bin (cars parked in front or other obstructions)
  • the bin was overfull or contained materials that are not allowed
  • we may have accidentally missed your bin.

If your bin collection was missed simply follow the steps on our Report a problem – Residential bins page.

Whose bin service changed?

We have made changes to all residential wheelie bin service schedules across the Gold Coast. Find out if your day or week has changed by searching your address above. Please note that even if your bin service day or week has not changed, the time of collection may change. Please place your bins out the night before to avoid missed services.

What are the changes?

We have changed the routes of our bin collection to help reduce truck time on the road and create a more sustainable service.

Below are the four ways your bin services could change:

  1. Time of service change only (always place your bins out the night before)
  2. Change to collection days
  3. Change to collection week for your recycling and green organics bin
  4. Change to both collection day and collection week

Find out if your day and or week has changing by searching your address above.

When did the changes occur?

The first day of the new schedule is 17 March 2025. Find out if your day and or week has changed by searching your address above.

Why were changes made?

This is the first significant change to bin collection schedules in 20 years. Substantial growth and changes to our city and road networks during this time means that it has become essential to adjust the bin collection routes and schedules of our collection trucks. The new routes and schedules will address the growth and changes and benefit our community by:

  • helping maintain reliable and efficient bin collection services
  • contributing to reducing traffic congestion and improving the city's amenity
  • enhancing traffic, pedestrian, and truck driver safety.

What should I do to get prepared?

Get familiar with your new schedule by adding it to your calendar and setting reminders. There may be some additional time between your previous collection day and your new collection day.

How do I know if the number of days between my collections is longer than usual during this change?

  1. If your day has moved back later in the week then it’s likely the number of days between your first collection on the new schedule will be longer than usual.
  2. If the week for your recycling or green organics bins has changed, this may mean the number of days between your first collection will be longer than usual. See the tips below for getting prepared.

What should I do if the time between the collection of my bins is longer than usual during the roll out of the new schedule?

There are several ways you can prevent your bin from overflowing between your old collection date and new collection date.

For your general waste bin, these may include:

  • Minimise your food waste by following the 5 simple steps of our Love Food Hate Waste program.
  • Bring your waste to one of our City waste and recycling centres for disposal. Use our interactive map to find the locations, services and operating hours of waste and recycling centres on the Gold Coast.

For your recycling bin, these may include:

  • Safely compact or flatten items like cardboard boxes prior to placing them into your recycling bin to make the most of the bin space.
  • Store excess recyclable items in a safe and dry place until your new collection date.
  • Bring your bulky recyclable items into one of our City waste and recycling centres for recycling. Use our interactive map to find the locations, services and operating hours of waste and recycling centres on the Gold Coast.

For your garden organics bin, these may include:

  • Delay any major gardening activities planned after your old collection date until your new collection date to avoid overflow of your green organics bin.
  • Bring your garden organics into one of our City waste and recycling centres for recycling. Use our interactive map to find the locations, services and operating hours of waste and recycling centres on the Gold Coast.

Will the frequency of bin collections change?

No. Your bins will continue to be collected weekly for general waste and fortnightly for recycling and green organics.

Will I have more than one collection day?

No. Your bins will be collected on the same day every week.

What if I have shared wheelie bins?

Bin days have changed for all residential wheelie bins. If you live in a unit or complex with shared wheelie bin services, the schedule for these wheelie bins will also change. Find out if your day or week has changed by searching your address above.

What if I have a commercial wheelie bin?

If you are a commercial customer with a wheelie bin that is collected once a week, your collection time, day or week may have also changed. Find out if your day and or week has changed by searching your address above.

If your wheelie bin is collected more than once a week, your schedule will not be changing at this time. We will contact you before 30 June to discuss your future schedule and collection requirements.

If you have a bulk bin there will be no changes to your schedule.

How do I update my City of Gold Coast app bin day notification?

Make sure you have the latest version of the app. Open the app to refresh the bin day information on the home screen. This will refresh both the information and any notification set up.

If you are having trouble with your notification, ensure focus mode / do not disturb is switched off on your device.

If this does not work, please remove your bin day address and re-add it, setting up your notification again.

Will the iCalendar I downloaded from the Find my bin day website have my new schedule?

The iCalendar downloaded from our Find my bin day tool will not have your new collection day. From 17 March 2025, a new personalised iCalendar will be available to download from this webpage.
