General waste

Everyday household rubbish that can’t be recycled or composted is called general waste. General waste is sent to landfill. We encourage residents to reuse, recycle and recover waste wherever possible.

Your general waste bin

Put waste that can’t be donated, recycled or composted in your red or dark green-lid general waste bin.

General waste bins are collected weekly.

Examples:

  • soft plastics and packaging such as chip packets, cling wrap and plastic bags
  • nappies, sanitary products and wipes
  • food scraps that can’t go in organics or green waste bins
  • broken household items such as glassware and crockery
  • polystyrene foam and heavily soiled containers
  • general clutter such as dust, lint and sweepings.

What doesn’t go in your general waste bin

Some items can cause fires, injuries or serious safety hazards during collection and processing.

Don't put batteries or vapes in the bin

Batteries and disposable vapes can ignite and set fire to our garbage trucks when crushed. Help keep our workers safe – don’t put used batteries and vapes in the bin.

Recycle Street accepts most used batteries. Many local retailers also collect batteries for safe disposal.

Do not place these items in any of your bins:

  • chemicals, paints, batteries, disposable vapes and other hazardous waste
  • e-waste (for example, TVs and computers)
  • gas bottles or pressurised items
  • large bulky items
  • construction materials.

Keep general waste out of recycling and organics bins

Never put general waste in your yellow recycling bin or green organics bin. It can:

  • contaminate recyclable materials
  • make the entire load difficult or impossible to process
  • damage equipment at waste and recycling facilities
  • ruin compost, making it unsafe to use
  • increase the cost of waste processing.

Downside your general waste bin

If you produce less general waste, you can switch to a smaller 140 litre general waste bin.

This may be a good option if you already separate your recycling and green organics.
