Our NaturallyGC Junior Wild Defenders program empowers kids and young people. We want to guide you to take action to preserve nature. Learn about the importance of our flora and fauna, and our environment. Check out our interactive and fun educational booklets.

Each booklet includes several challenges and tasks to explore. Kids can explore nature and conservation-based topics. Some of the tasks include on ground action, drawing, design, art, building, photography, quizzes and getting crafty.

Complete a topic to collect a cool Wild Defender badge. Once you've completed all 12 topics and have all the badges, you are an Official Junior Wild Defender!

This program was proudly produced in conjunction with local organisation Green Heroes. Green Heroes believe that every child has the power to make a positive impact on the environment. First through understanding, followed by action.

How to complete the program

These NaturallyGC Junior Wild Defenders digital booklets are interactive PDFs. Here's how you complete the program:

  1. Download the Wild Defenders editable poster(PDF, 1MB)
  2. Download and save your chosen booklet from the topics below.
  3. Complete the tasks and challenges from each booklet. Type answers or upload photos of your artwork in the relevant sections.
  4. As the booklets are completed, download the digital badges and save them electronically into the poster.

Here is an overview of each of the 12 topics, their booklet and badge.

Topic 1 – Astronomy

Astronomy Badge

See the stars shine for you and learn secrets of the night sky. Begin to understand why astronomy has captured people's imaginations since before time began. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Astronomy Badge you will test your:

  • design and construction abilities
  • powers of observation
  • navigation skills and creativity.

Topic 2 – The big clean up

The Big Clean Up Badge

Be part of the solution not part of the pollution. Learn why it's important for all of us to do our best to clean up, avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle waste. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Clean Up Badge you'll need to complete 3 challenges:

  • create a superhero to help fight the war on waste
  • do a 100-point clean up
  • design a recycling bin.

Topic 3 – Brilliant bats

Brilliant Bats Badge

Discover the secret lives of bats, microbats and flying foxes. Begin to understand why they need our protection. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Brilliant Bats Badge you will need to:

  • identify the body parts of a bat
  • learn what to do with a sick or injured bat
  • test your knowledge about bats
  • use some cool drawing techniques to draw a bat
  • make a pledge to keep them safe.

Topic 4 – The green house

Green House Badge

Discover why it's important to reduce pollution and learn how we can all tread more lightly on the earth. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Green House Badge, you will need to:

  • make a plan to reduce your carbon footprint
  • make your own range of amazing household cleaning products
  • plant a food garden
  • build a worm hotel.

Topic 5 – Habitat garden

Habitat Garden Badge

Nature and me are meant to be. Help wildlife by recreating lost habitat in your garden. Link your garden to the entire local habitat on which the birds and other animals depend. To earn your Junior Wild Defender Habitat Garden Badge you will need to:

  • complete a backyard fauna survey
  • planning a habitat garden
  • planting natives
  • providing water for wildlife
  • create a lizard lounge.

Topic 6 – Mapping

Mapping Badge

Discover the world around you as you begin to observe and record details on a map. To earn your Junior Wild Defender Mapping Badge, you will:

  • learn to use and read a map
  • create your own map
  • hide some treasures close by and mark them with an X on your map for others to find.

Topic 7 – Marsupials

Marsupials Badge

Marsupials are pouched mammals which give birth to babies that are not fully developed. Although some, such as the numbat does not have a pouch. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Marsupials Badge, you will:

  • discover some of Queensland's incredible marsupial animals
  • learn where they live
  • discover what they eat
  • learn how you can help them to stay strong and healthy in the wild.

Topic 8 – Nature photography

Nature Photography Badge

You don't take a photograph, you make it! Photography is powerful communication which can capture moments in time and help preserve memories. It documents events for media or new discoveries for science. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Nature Photography Badge, you will:

  • learn the many different styles of photography
  • learn how to take photos
  • experiment and take lots of photos you will soon become an expert!

Topic 9 – Tree hugger

Tree Hugger Badge

The trees and me were meant to be! Discover the trees living in your neighbourhood. Observe the different colours, leaf shapes, seeds, flowers and bark textures. Collect interesting finds for your scavenger scrapbook. Other challenges you will need to complete to earn your Junior Wild Defenders Tree Hugger Badge include:

  • creating a journal
  • planting a local native tree
  • completing a variety of fun activities to do with your tree!

Topic 10 – Turtletastic

Turtletastic Badge

An ocean free of plastic would be turtletastic! All seven species of marine turtle are now threatened with extinction. You have five challenges to complete. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Turtletastic badge, you will:

  • identify the parts of a marine turtle's body and the different species
  • test your knowledge of marine turtle facts
  • create a life cycle diorama
  • make a pledge to help keep marine turtles safe.

Topic 11 – Wildlife artist

Wildlife Artist Badge

Nature inspires creativity. Look closely at 4 different native Australian animals. In taking time to observe these animals you may truly see their unique shapes, patterns, colours and contours. You have four challenges to complete. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Wildlife Artist Badge badge, you will:

  • creating your own emu
  • creating a 3D layered numbat
  • create a magazine strip koala, and dot art turtle.

Topic 12 – Wildlife rescue

Wildlife Rescue Badge

Big or small, be kind to all! Native animals need rescuing for all kinds of reasons. Learn how to give lifesaving first aid to native animals that need our help. You have 5 challenges to complete. To earn your Junior Wild Defenders Wildlife Rescue Badge, you will:

  • make a rescue kit
  • learn your bird facts
  • create an awareness raising poster
  • write a story about your favourite native animal
  • pledge to support wildlife.
