Great Southern BioBlitz - Gold Coast

Help document our city's flora and fauna by participating the second Great Southern BioBlitz.

Spring has sprung in the southern hemisphere and by the end of October the natural world is on full throttle. Flowers are blooming, insects are emerging, birds are singing, and reptiles are coming out of their winter hibernation. It’s a great time to observe many of our local species.

The Great Southern BioBlitz is 4 days of intense biological surveying with the aim of recording all the living species across the southern hemisphere in spring. The BioBlitz is happening in more than 100 regions across Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South America and many Pacific Islands from Friday the 22 October until the end of Monday on the 25 October.

How to participate

You don't need to be an expert, anyone can participate by either using the iNaturalist app or joining one of our workshops or walks.

Using the iNaturalist app

Step 1

Download the iNaturalist app to your handheld device or create an account.

Don't worry if you are new to iNaturalist or identifying plants and animals. The app has online resources to help you and artificial intelligence to help you identify plants and animals.

Step 2

When you have an account, join our iNaturalist - Great Southern BioBlitz - Gold Coast project

Step 3

From Friday 22 to Monday 25 October 2021 get into nature and use the iNaturalist - Great Southern BioBlitz - Gold Coast project to record plants and animals that you see. No need to touch or disturb anything, just take photos or record sounds. Don't worry if you can't identify the species, just make sure you get some good clear photos or sounds and identify it at the highest level (for example, frog).  There will be time to identify the observations after the Bioblitz.

To find a natural area park near you check out our bushwalks and nature trails page.
