Bally Mountain Conservation Area

Bally Mountain Conservation Area in Bonogin is 483 hectares in size. It was purchased by the City, with some funding to acquire the Rosegum and Araluen Road sections by the Australian Government, for a contribution to the National Reserve system.

The Bally Mountain Conservation Reserves make an important contribution to the landscape values of the Gold Coast.

They form part of the vegetated ridgeline that separates Tallebudgera and Austinville valleys and are part of an important wildlife corridor that runs from Burleigh National Park through to Springbrook Mountain.

These reserves have interesting geological formations and ecosystems that are characteristic of the Gold Coast's southern hinterland, with some higher altitude type flora present on top of Bally Mountain and Mount Gannon. They conserve a diverse assemblage of native flora and provide a range of habitat types to support local, nomadic and migratory fauna species. A large number of rare and threatened plants and animals has been recorded within these reserves.

Bally Mountain summit trail

The Class 5 summit trail is a tough 6-kilometre return trek, suitable only for experienced walkers with a high level of fitness. This challenging return trail takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete.

Starting at the parking area, walk along the gravel road for 1 kilometre and then you will find the trailhead sign. It begins with a creek crossing, followed by a steep, loose, uneven surface incline that gets your heart pumping. Towards the top there are exposed and very steep rock sections that require rock scrambling.

At the summit you will be rewarded with panoramic views to the ocean, Springbrook and Wollumbin (Mount Warning).

Please note: There are many informal trails in this reserve that traverse over private property so stay on the City of Gold Coast signed recreational trails as referenced in our trail map.

Safety first

Do not climb in poor visibility, fading daylight, wet or windy conditions, and exercise caution near the exposed cliff edges.
Before heading off, inform someone where you are going and what time you expect to return, as there is limited telephone service.
Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing, and take a first-aid kit, sufficient food and water.
No toilet facilities are available at this site.

Horse riding

Horse riding is permitted on the designated trails identified on the map below. Horse riding trails are also located within Springbrook National Park (contact Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for more information).
