Enjoy nature trails through bushland and immerse yourself in the history of the heritage listed Ernest Junction Railway Tunnel.

The 900m walking track starting from Activity Crescent, Molendinar, meanders through native bushland, leading to the impressive entrance to the Ernest Junction Tunnel at Ashmore Road.

The picturesque qualities of the curving tunnel, surrounded by bushland, has become a popular destination for artists, photographers and history enthusiasts. The tunnel is also popular with musicians due to its incredible acoustics.

History

The Ernest Junction Railway Tunnel (1885-1889) is one of the last remnants of the former Brisbane–South Coast railway line, which closed in 1964. The historic single track railway line allowed Southport to grow into one of Queensland’s major holiday destinations.

In 2014, the Ernest Junction Tunnel Friends group was established and started a project to restore the 100m long tunnel. For details on the history of the tunnel, visit Gold Coast Stories.
