  • The City of Gold Coast has completed the detailed design for the Broadwater Parklands Play Attraction and is getting ready for construction early next year.
  • A public tender process has already commenced to identify the most experienced contractor to undertake the works.
  • Once completed, the Play Attraction will be a ‘must do’ destination for local residents and visitors wanting to experience a unique, engaging and exciting play space.

Project vision

  • The vision for the Broadwater Parklands Play Attraction (BPPA) is to create a special place for people of different abilities and multiple generations to play, interact and socialise.
  • The BPPA will provide a variety of physically challenging and imaginary play experiences whilst also providing informal gathering spaces for all visitors to enjoy the Broadwater.
  • The BPPA will address the lack of play spaces in the northern precinct of the Parklands and also extend the parkland’s capacity as one of the city’s most popular parks.

Play provision

  • The Play Attraction has been designed to provide a variety of physically challenging and imaginary play experiences whilst also providing informal gathering spaces for all visitors to enjoy the Broadwater.
  • Visitors will also learn about the Broadwater’s fascinating bird and sea life as they interact with features and embellishments such as oversized mud crabs, sculptural birds, murals and discovery trails.

The key features of the project are:

  • a tall spiral play tower with four different levels and a variety of interactive play equipment within the tower including a glockenspiel, binoculars and telescopes, suspended nets and rope tunnels and an enclosed spiral slide
  • a water and sand play area including carved sandstone blocks, bronze sea animals, water pumps and mini weirs and water gates
  • an elevated sand table designed as a ‘fish and chip shop’ that can accommodate wheelchair users
  • other types of play equipment including play panels, swings and slides, trampolines, diggers, stepping stones, balance beams, carousel, climbing walls and climbing nets
  • shade sails over the play equipment
  • a large shelter with seating and barbecue facilities and a kitchenette for children’s birthday parties and social gatherings
  • lush subtropical landscape and extensive lawn areas for social gatherings and picnics.

Construction

  • Construction is due to start early next year and will take approximately 12 to 18 months.
