Sport attraction

As host city for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), the Gold Coast invested in new world class sporting infrastructure, building on the city's existing high performance sporting facilities.

Off the back of the success of GC2018, the Gold Coast has continued to build on its sporting credentials, hosting the world's largest sport business conference, SportAccord, in 2019 and a calendar of sports in 2020 including the AFL, which saw Metricon Stadium hosting 40 games, from 11 games, in one season.

The Gold Coast was awarded Best Newcomer in Sport Business International's bi-annual Ultimate Sport Cities Rankings in 2018 and ranked 22nd top sporting city on the Sportcal Global Sport Index – the top Australian city in the index.

The City of Gold Coast has a significant sport business and attraction program that has generated $120 million in economic activity over the past 7 years, through:

  • national sporting organisation attraction
  • centre of excellence attraction
  • elite sporting camp attraction
  • elite exhibition game attraction
  • sport business attraction
  • sport business supply chain development
  • sport business missions (domestic and international).
