Mayor's Annual Christmas Appeal

2018 Mayor's Christmas Appeal

Christmas is a time of giving, especially to those in need.

In 2018, the beneficiaries of the Mayor's Christmas Appeal were Paradise Kids and Friends with Dignity.

Friends with Dignity

Friends with Dignity is a self-funded Gold Coast-based charity providing support to domestic and family violence victims. The charity is run by volunteers and is reliant on both financial donations and new and pre-loved items –including whitegoods, furniture and household items used to transform empty spaces into welcoming homes for men, women and children needing to start a new life.

Paradise Kids

Paradise Kids offers art, movement, music, story-telling and safe anger management techniques to allow children to grow positively through their loss rather than through repression of their feelings. Children work in groups with an individual trained grief counselling ‘buddy’.

Paradise Kids was founded by Deirdre Hanna and Rev. Dr Ian Mavor as an extension of the services provided by the Hopewell Hospice and, while still a division of the same charity, it has developed its own unique identity. They developed an integral approach to address all aspects of the child - body, mind and spirit. All children grieve differently and may express anger, fear, guilt, repetitive behaviour and regression. These reactions are a normal response to loss of any kind.

The Paradise Kids choir angels also collected for the appeal at the Mayor’s Christmas Carols at Broadwater Parklands on Saturday 1 December.

Thank you for your generosity and support of this wonderful initiative.
