Green waste bin collection

The green waste bin service is now City-wide! All households with a kerbside bin service are now eligible.

Green waste bins are an easy and affordable way for residents and businesses to quickly and easily dispose of their garden waste. The green waste bin can accept grass clippings, palm fronds, prunings, weeds, leaves and small branches. The green waste bin is serviced fortnightly on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin.

For around $1 per week, you can have a green waste bin at your home.

The green waste bin is 240 litre in capacity, with a natural green base and a lime green lid. If you are unsure of the capacity of your bins you can check easily by lifting the lid of your bin, and looking around the rim.

The expected timeframe for delivery of your new bin(s) is approximately up to 10 business days from receipt of your application. In some instances, the timeframe for delivery may be affected by your property location and the delivery schedule of our contractor.

Both property owners and tenants can apply for this service. Fees apply for this service.

If you live in an apartment, townhouse or unit, and have a Body Corporate, you will need to provide written approval from your Body Corporate before you can apply for a green waste service.

Additionally, you will need to follow the application process, depending on whether you are the owner or the tenant.

  • If I move can I take the green waste bin with me?

Property owner - No, the bin service should be cancelled at the old property and application for the service at the new property made. To cancel your green waste service contact City of Gold Coast, Waste Management by email wastemanagement@goldcoast.qld.gov.au or phone 07 5667 5976.

No, green waste should be placed loosely into the green waste bin.

  • Can I put palm fronds into the green waste bin?

Yes, but they must be cut to fit into the green waste bin with the lid closed. Palm fronds cannot be bent to fit into the bin as the fronds may block the collection truck once the lid is opened (palm fronds can be cut with secateurs).

  • What can I do if I have too much garden waste for my green waste bin?

Larger green waste bins are not available for green waste. Due to the high moisture content in green waste the added weight in the larger bins results in a high incidence of damage to both the bin and the bin arms of the collection trucks. In addition, larger bins can encourage misuse as items that exceed the acceptable size and diameter are disposed of in the larger bin which can cause damage to the compaction mechanism of the collection trucks.

You can order an additional green waste bin - the applicable green waste bin fees will apply to each additional bin ordered i.e that is the annual service fee for owners or annual service fee and bond for tenants. Rates and charges are renewed annually, and the charge may vary in the next rating year. Alternatively, you can take your additional or unacceptable green waste to a Green Waste Drop and Go.

  • Where does the green waste go?

Kerbside green waste will be recycled beneficially into compost.

We ask that you include your contact details, address, bin type and any possible reason that the bin may not have been emptied. There are several reasons why a bin does not get collected, including:

    • the bin was not able to be reached by the truck (cars parked in front or other obstructions)
