Preparing for interruption of water services

filling a glass of water

Should you experience an interruption in your water service, this may be due to a scheduled project or unplanned works, such as a hydrant repair or water leak. For advice regarding water and sewerage interruptions view our Water and sewerage alerts.

While we will always work quickly to restore your water service, we do recommend preparing for both planned and unexpected water outages. We recommend having approximately four litres of water per person per day set aside for drinking.

Planned water outages

For planned water outages, you should receive a letter indicating the expected type of work and timing it will take.

We recommend you consider the following to prepare for your water shutdown:

  • Place some drinking water in your fridge.
  • Fill a tub or bucket with water to use for toilet flushing, or make alternative arrangements for accessing a toilet away from your home if necessary. Pour water from the bucket into your toilet bowl to flush, but only flush when absolutely necessary. Please only lift the tub or bucket if you believe you can safely do so.
  • Use anti-bacterial hand sanitiser for hand washing.

Water discolouration

In some instances, your water may become discoloured following a water interruption. This is potentially due to some air and debris entering the pipes.

To help rectify the discolouration, we recommend the following:

  • Do not drink discoloured water.
  • Run cool water from the tap furthest from the water meter for several minutes until the water runs clear. Do this before any other water-using device is operated.
  • Avoid washing any laundry until the taps have been flushed, to avoid staining from water discolouration.
  • Do not run hot water immediately.
  • Discard any ice cubes that were automatically produced in your fridge or freezer during the water interruption.

Should water continue to remain dirty after more than 10 minutes, please call 07 5667 5801 or 1300 000 928 as we may need to investigate further.
