A whale festival will be held on the Gold Coast for the first time on Saturday 31 August at Burleigh Beach. Organised by Humpbacks and Highrises (HHR), a local non-governmental organisation the festival hopes to increase awareness in the local community about the need to care for our oceans and the migrating whales that visit the east coast of Australia every year.

The Whale Festival is an opportunity for the public to learn more about how their actions can impact the welfare of the world’s largest marine mammals. There will be stalls and exhibits from various organisations which are also spearheading many environmental actions such as Gecko and Dolphin Research, and activities to give everyone a chance to be the change they want to see: a beach scavenger hunt clean-up with exciting prizes, a whale watch from the headland, and storytelling for our youngest to learn more about whales. Other exhibitors will showcase products that will lessen our impact on the environment and assist in our becoming waste-free.

There will be live music from local talented artists including BLIGH and The Lost Knights, with the festival ending with a screening of “Humpback Whales” narrated by Ewan McGregor.

Background to HHR

Since 2011, HHR has been running Queensland's largest marine mammal monitoring program dedicated to the protection and research of marine mammals. Our mission is to ensure present and future generations of the community have access to enjoy, appreciate and care for whales and dolphins through research, rescue and education.

HHR spokesman, Olaf  Meynecke, said, ”We have been collecting data on humpback whales and other marine mammals since 2011 - in fact, it is Queensland’s largest marine mammal monitoring program. Now, we want to share some of our excitement about these amazing creatures.”
