Danielle Hawkins and the art of rural storytelling
Published on 21 January 2026
I first discovered Danielle Hawkins by chance while browsing for something new to read through our online library and fell in love with her writing right from the start! Her storytelling immediately resonated with me — not just because I’m married to a Kiwi and the settings felt so familiar, but also because of her wonderfully dry humour, down-to-earth tone, and refreshingly honest storytelling. I love the way she captures everyday moments with such authenticity.
The first Danielle Hawkins’ book I read was When It All Turned to Custard, a heartwarming and witty tale of resilience and fresh starts. Set against the beautiful rural landscapes of New Zealand, the story follows Jenny Reynolds as her world is turned upside down by her husband’s betrayal. What truly drew me in was the uplifting tone, which made it impossible to put the book down — and sparked my desire to read more of her work.
After that, I dived into Two Shakes of a Lamb’s Tail, which may just be my favourite of all her books. I also thoroughly enjoyed A Dinner at Rose’s, The Pretty Delicious Cafe, and Chocolate Cake for Breakfast — a delightful read, especially for Rugby fans. Honestly, I couldn’t get enough of these stories.
Hawkins’ latest book, Take Two, effortlessly balances laughter and tears, taking readers on an emotional and heartwarming journey. The book follows Laura, who once ended a long-term relationship with Doug because she wanted children and he didn't. Seven years later, a casual visit to her former in-laws sees Laura thrown into a whirlwind: Doug's father is terminally ill, his mom is incapacitated with a broken leg, his wife goes into premature labour, and Laura ends up managing the farm, the household, even the children. Meanwhile, sparks quietly begin to fly between Laura and Doug’s younger brother, Mick.
Being a farmer, a vet, and a mum alongside her writing career, it’s no wonder Danielle Hawkins nails everyday rural life in New Zealand so perfectly!
Do yourself a favour and get stuck into one of her books today — you won’t regret it!
