Mermaid Waters – Cottesloe Drive – bridge refurbishment

Commencing: February 2021
Completion: July 2021 (weather permitting)
Cost: $989,000

Project information

We will be undertaking maintenance works on the Cottesloe Drive Bridge over Sailfish Canal in Mermaid Waters. These works are necessary to ensure the ongoing safety and serviceability of the 45-year-old bridge.

Construction details

The purpose of the works is to rehabilitate the existing degraded bridge piles. Further works will include rehabilitation to the bridge abutment, repair cracks on headstocks and maintenance to the transverse stressing bars. The majority of the works are to the bridge substructure (underneath), with limited work required on the superstructure (surface/deck), resulting in minimal impact to traffic.

Works will occur between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. We are making considerable effort to minimise disruptions. However, local residents may notice construction noise and dust at times.

The bridge will remain open at all times, with some temporary speed and traffic restrictions for vehicles. Pedestrian traffic over the bridge will be impacted for short periods of time during construction; however access will always be maintained. Movement of maritime vessels will be restricted during the pile repair and substructure works, however access under the bridge will always be maintained. Signage will be installed to alert bridge users about the changed traffic conditions.

Community benefits

Project benefits include:

  • improved safety for all bridge users
  • structural integrity of bridge maintained, and service life of its components extended
  • reduced ongoing maintenance costs.
