Set amongst the parkland next to Currumbin Creek and with easy access to the nearby skate park, the location of Thrower House allows for outdoor activities, exercise and outdoor games which are regular features of the after school program.
School holiday programs also take place at Thrower House. Details of these activities are provided on our website prior to each holiday period.
With an emphasis on young people, the house offers a main meeting area with television and computer games available. An adjacent computer area allows young people to utilise Internet access and Microsoft Office programs. The kitchen provides an opportunity for young people to learn some basic cooking skills through the school holiday programs.
An arts shed adjacent to the house allows for various art activities to be held. School holiday programs regularly include activities that utilise this space such as tie dying, soap making, special effect make up workshops and jewellery making.
This centre is not available for hire, however is designed as a safe supportive centre where young people aged between 12 and 17 years can access various services and get involved in the regular programs that are facilitated by the youth service provider Wesley Mission. Wesley Mission provide the youth program on behalf of the City of Gold Coast.
Thrower House opened in 2009 in response to local support for a youth orientated venue on the southern Gold Coast. The local community including schools, community members and support organisations contributed to the design and consultation phases.
The original building was kindly donated to the City of Gold Coast. Due to its age and condition, the property was unfortunately beyond repair and as a result the new building was designed to replicate the original. The style of the building is typical of the houses that were once common in the area.
During the consultation phase, a key objective of the project was Thrower House would be accessible making it easier for people with all abilities to utilise the space. This outcome was achieve with features incorporated into the design such as a ramp, wide doorways, accessible kitchen and bathroom. These features have allowed programs such as the young parents group to easily use the venue.
