A $10.85 million koala support fund has been set up by the City of Gold Coast to further protect our much loved iconic mammal and conserve the city’s unique biodiversity, through the purchase of koala habitat.
The fund was endorsed when the City Budget 2018-19 was delivered on 21 June 2018.
From 1 July 2018, ratepayers will contribute $3 per annum to a special fit-for-purpose koala levy, for koala habitat acquisition and enhancement. Around $800,000 will be raised through the Koala Habitat Acquisition and Enhancement separate charge levied in the 2018-19 financial year with the City planning to borrow the additional $10.05 million. Ratepayers are welcome to voluntarily contribute additional funds, please see your rates notice for information.
The City will use the funds for acquiring and protecting land for koala habitat within the city.
The City voted, on 26 February 2019, to take steps to purchase a high priority property in the Coomera region.
This purchase follows an independent investigation undertaken to design and prioritise a protected koala habitat network for the long term protection of the East Coomera koala population.
Specific land improvements will be identified once sites are acquired and management plans established. Potential land enhancements include fencing, fauna crossings and habitat restoration opportunities so the native vegetation remains in good condition.
The City has resolved to investigate the protection and management of a koala population at Coomera-Pimpama as an immediate priority. This will make an important contribution to biodiversity conservation locally and help to maintain and support overall genetic diversity within koala populations across the city.
Voluntary contributions can be made online using BPAY Biller code 37424 and Customer Reference 2 5625200 8. (Please note contributions are a minimum of $2 and a tax deduction does not apply). Thank you for your generous assistance.Back Return to top
