Music Action Plan – The Business of Music

Calling all Gold Coast-based musicians, managers, venue owners, creatives or producers!
Starting Wednesday 5 February 2020, The Business of Music is a project-based group-mentoring program designed to teach you the crucial skills involved in running a successful music business. If you understand the importance of a strong network and continual professional development then this is the course for you!
This nine week course is led by Brad Hosking (Blind Boy Studios, Amy Shark) and provides the opportunity to network with like-minded industry peers and learn from the industry’s leading professionals. Special guest presenters from the previous course include: Tyler McLoughlan from The Sound Pound, Andy Irvine from GYROstream, Stephen Wade from Select Music, Trina Massey from the Association of Artist Managers, Karla Ranby and Tommy Faith from Triple J, Jarryd James, Hussy Hicks and Ian Peres (Wolfmother, Xavier Rudd).
Brad and the team work with you as a group to determine your areas of interest to build the program content and book speakers throughout the course accordingly. In conjunction you will also receive a subscription to Music Inside Out, Australia’s leading online music industry professional development resource.
The core topics you will learn about include (but are not limited to):
- common music business contracts
- royalties and income streams
- how copyright can work for you
- keeping your books in order
- taking the scary out of tax
- how to market your project
- how to distribute your music for streaming.
As you move through the course you have the opportunity to apply it directly to your own business and projects and you'll learn how others are applying it to theirs.
If you're a musician, manager, venue owner, creative or producer looking to expand your horizons in the music business, whilst expanding your network and developing your professional practice, The Business of Music is the course for you. Up to 20 places are available for Gold Coast-based music industry professionals who can evidence a minimum of two years professional activity.
Additionally you must be:
- a Gold Coast resident
- an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
The Business of Music is proudly delivered by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast’s Music Action Plan 2021. Participants will have the first $1000 supported by the Music Action Plan and will need to pay the remaining $340.00 directly to TAFE upon enrolment.
- Enrolments are open now and close January 31 2020.
- Course commences Wednesday 5 February 2020, 4pm to 6.30pm and continues each Wednesday for nine weeks.
- Course closes 1 April 2020.

The Music Action Plan 2021 (MAP 2021) provides a blueprint for the City that will positively impact the live music sector on the Gold Coast by providing access to resources, promotion of Gold Coast music nationally and internationally and stronger partnerships across all tiers of government, peak bodies, and private enterprise.
Central to the Plan are a series of programs including the EXCEED Program that offers a range of initiatives and activities to support the development of the Gold Coast Music Industry. A key initiative of the EXCEED Program is — The Business of Music.
