City of Gold Coast is undertaking routine testing of all potable (drinking) water fire hydrants.
This program of works will include inspection of all 34,000 hydrants across the Gold Coast between April 2016 to February 2018.
Although the City already maintains these hydrants, further testing will help determine the performance and condition of these fire hydrants, and will allow us to identify those that require future maintenance.
Testing of fire hydrants will occur on week days (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 7am and 4pm.
No interruption to a customer’s water supply is expected during these works.
An amount of water will be lost through each hydrant as it is tested. Capturing this lost water is not cost effective when compared to the cost of hiring a truck to capture any lost flow; however our officers will always endeavour to minimise water wastage.
Fire hydrants are designed to provide the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) with access to potable water to fight potential fires. Everyone can assist the QFRS, and their neighbours, by keeping hydrant surrounds free of debris and dust.
