Traffic area locations

A traffic area is a mapped geographical area where timed on-street parking controls apply. The information below will help you investigate and identify whether you live in a designated traffic area.

You can use this information to apply for a resident or visitor parking permit.

Bundall/Chevron Island Traffic Area

Three hour traffic area (3P) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

In response to community concerns about the overflow of commercial parking in the area, the City of Gold Coast introduced changes to the parking surrounding the Bundall / Chevron Island central business district (CBD). Traffic Area entry signs are located on the perimeter of the precinct, which extends north from Ashmore Road to Slatyer Avenue, up Racecourse Drive and east to the Nerang River and to Thomas Drive. Off-street parking at the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct has independent parking restrictions.

The Bundall/Chevron Island Traffic Area entry points are clearly signed and there are reminder signs throughout the area. Parking within this area is limited to three (3) hours on week days, unless otherwise signed.

Central Traffic Area

Three hour traffic area (3P) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

The Central Traffic Area has been implemented to manage parking accessibility for residents and visitors to the businesses, beachfront and entertainment hubs of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. Parking within this area is limited to three (3) hours on week days, unless otherwise signed.

The boundary of the Central Traffic Area begins at northern Ferny Avenue, extending south to Surfers and Sunbrite Avenues, and west to Sunshine Boulevard. The Central Traffic Area came into effect in February 2018.

Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct Traffic Area

Two hour traffic area (2P) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

In response to community concerns about overflow parking from the Gold Coast University Hospital, and Griffith University the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct Traffic Area was established in February 2018. Traffic Area entry points are clearly signed and there are reminder signs throughout. Parking within this area is limited to two (2) hours on week days unless otherwise signed. After this time you must move your vehicle from the parking space.

Main Beach Traffic Area - event days only

The centre of the Main Beach suburb is located in the heart of the GC600 event precinct. In October of each year to coincide with this event, the Main Beach Traffic Area is activated to manage traffic flow and parking, making moving around the city easier. The Main Beach Traffic Area restricts parking on signed event days — such as the GC600 — to two (2) hours, unless a valid parking permit is displayed on the vehicle. Resident event parking permits will be provided by the event organisers. Residents are not required to apply for permits.

The boundary of the Main Beach Traffic Area is from Main Beach Parade, north of Ferny Avenue, to Seaworld Drive and including Waterways Drive, encompassing the residential areas on both sides of the Gold Coast Highway. The Main Beach Traffic Area restricts parking on signed event days to two (2) hours unless a valid parking permit is displayed on the vehicle. The Main Beach Traffic Area came into effect in January 2018.

Robina Stadium Traffic Area - event days only

The Robina Stadium (Cbus Super Stadium) Traffic Area restricts parking on signed event days to two (2) minutes unless a valid parking permit is displayed on the vehicle. Robina Stadium is located in the suburb of Robina, next to Robina railway station and near Robina Town Centre. The boundary of the Robina Stadium Traffic Area extends from Robina Town Centre Drive to Robina Parkway, encompassing the commercial and residential area within, including Investigator Drive and Campus Crescent. Traffic Area entry points are clearly signed and there are reminder signs throughout.

Time restrictions do not apply on public holidays in the Robina Stadium Traffic Area unless otherwise signed for an event.

Southern Traffic Area

Four hour traffic area (4P) Monday to Sunday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

The Southern Traffic Area was implemented to manage parking accessibility for residents and visitors to the beachfront and commercial precinct along Golden Four Drive. Located between Surf and Musgrave Streets, Bilinga, the Southern Traffic Area encompasses streets which were previously time restricted.

Traffic Area entry points are clearly signed and there are reminder signs throughout. Parking within this area is limited to four (4) hours. After this time you must move your vehicle from the parking space.

Southport Traffic Area

Two hour traffic area (2P) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

In response to community concern about the overflow of commercial parking in residential areas surrounding the Gold Coast Central Business District (CBD), the Southport Traffic Area commenced operation in November 2006, with a boundary modification occurring in September 2019.

Surveys of unrestricted residential streets surrounding the Gold Coast CBD indicated that on any week day, between 80 and 90 per cent of available parking is occupied, often leaving no available space for residents and their visitors. Traffic Area entry points are clearly signed and there are reminder signs throughout. Parking within this area is limited to two (2) hours on week days unless otherwise signed. After this time you must move your vehicle from the parking space.

Stadium Residential Traffic Area (Metricon)- event days only

The Stadium Residential Traffic Area (Metricon Stadium - Carrara) restricts parking on event days to two (2) minutes (except as signed) unless a City of Gold Coast issued Resident’s parking permit is displayed on the vehicle.

Varsity Lakes Traffic Area

Two hour traffic area (2P) Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (except as signed)

Commercial and residential development in Varsity Lakes has resulted in high parking demands from the neighbouring university, commercial businesses, a school and existing residents. To ensure future parking demands are effectively managed, 2P time restrictions on week days were expanded slightly to create the Varsity Lakes Traffic Area.

The boundary extends north east to Lake Street, and south to the western end of Varsity Parade. Existing 2P linear signage was replaced with 2P Traffic Area signs on each entry in to the area, and a number of reminder signs have been installed in streets throughout the area. The Varsity Lakes Traffic Area came into effect in January 2018.
