Racecourse Drive weir rectification works

The City will be undertaking rectification works to the Racecourse Drive weir from early December 2019. The Racecourse Drive weir plays an important role in managing the flow of both tidal waters and flood waters in the city. Unfortunately recent unsanctioned removal of rocks from the weir has caused some sections of the structure to subside.

The weir helps reduce erosion along the Benowa flood channel and Nerang River during normal tidal exchanges by limiting tidal volumes, whilst rapidly discharging flood waters during severe weather. There are a number of weirs in the city that perform similar functions.

Rectification works are scheduled to commence early December and City officers will be on site between 7am and 3pm. The repairs are expected to take approximately one week. However, work of this nature is subject to weather, tides and the extent of damage which may impact the schedule.

There'll be no interruption to vehicle or pedestrian traffic along Racecourse Drive but the footpath across the weir will be closed. Much of the work will be conducted from a barge and there will be some noise. The City will endeavour to minimise impacts to residents and the public. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience during this time.
