Stormwater Drainage Safety Program 2020–21
Commencing: November 2020
Completion: June 2021
Cost: $377,920
As part of our annual stormwater safety program, the City of Gold Coast is upgrading a number of stormwater drain inlets and outlets to include safety devices.
We have assessed stormwater systems across the city and works will be completed in order of priority. High priority sites are located near schools, childcare centres, retail outlets, parks and sports facilities.
Safety upgrades include:
- installation of safety grates
- safety flood flaps
- safety/barrier fencing
- ring mounted security bars.
These devices will help mitigate instances of people (in particular children) entering the stormwater system and being trapped or washed into the system during a storm event.
Stormwater drains and grates can be dangerous during both wet and dry periods of the year. There are dangers before, during and after storms. Please remember to “use your brain, don’t play in the drain”. If you see a person or animal swept into or caught in a stormwater drain or flash flood, please phone Queensland Fire and Rescue Service on 000 immediately.
Construction details
- Works will take place at various sites across the city (refer to location of works below).
- Each site is expected to take approximately one to five days (weather permitting), and will generally be located in parks and road reserves (minimal to no traffic control required).
- Working hours will be Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.
- Local residents may notice some temporary construction noise and minor disruption in some areas.
- Pedestrian management may be required at some sites.
