Park design guidelines

Parks are an essential ingredient for enhancing the liveability of a city and improving the quality of life for its residents. Parks provide an array of social, health, economic and environmental benefits to individuals and to the community as a whole.

The Park design guideline has been developed to guide park design, ensuring the Gold Coast community is provided with a quality, safe and sustainable public parks network for all residents and visitors to the city.

Park infrastructure specifications and standard drawings

To ensure park infrastructure is fit for community purpose, sustainable, robust and cost effective, City of Gold Coast has developed minimum design standards for park infrastructure. These specifications and drawings are intended for use by City stakeholders, contractors, consultants and developers that are involved in the development of park infrastructure.

Links to the specifications and standard construction drawings can be found within the master document.

Open space solutions in high density areas

The Gold Coast’s population is fast growing, which continues to place increased demands on the city’s existing network of parks. Given the limited availability to acquire new parkland within the high density areas of the city, alternative solutions are required into the future. This report provides the following:

  • health and cost implications of inactivity, and the need for open space;
  • the challenges faced by the City with respect to providing sport, recreation and open space in high density areas of the city;
  • the current planning context in the Gold Coast in relation to the policy environment and the demographic/economic characteristics of the high density areas;
  • an outline of practices/examples used in other high density cities trying to maximise health outcomes while balancing provision of sport, recreation and open space with affordability; and
  • a series of options that might be applicable for the Gold Coast with regard to future sport, recreation and open space provision.
