Key statistics

These key statistics relate to families and children in Gold Coast City.

Household composition

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census of Population and Housing:

  • Family households formed 71 per cent of all households in the city, which equates to 145,416 families
  • 25,027 were one parent families with children (17.2 per cent of families)
  • 57,379 were couple families without children (39.5 per cent of families)
  • 60,903 were couple families with children (41.9 per cent of families).

Age structure and distribution (children 0-14 years)

  • The number of children in Gold Coast City is increasing, with an additional 9125 children aged 0 to 14 years old compared to five years ago.
  • Children aged 14 years and under formed 18.1 per cent of the city’s population.
  • There were 32,978 children aged 0 to 4 years (5.9 per cent of the population).
  • There were 34,860 children aged 5 to 9 years (6.3 per cent of the population).
  • There were 33,017 children aged 10 to 14 (5.9 per cent of the population).
  • A high percentage of families with children live in the north of the city.

Education (children 0-14 years)

  • 7553 children were attending Preschool on the Gold Coast
  • 43,802 children were attending Primary School.

Disability and need for assistance

  • 1600 Gold Coast children aged 0 to 9 years old had a profound or severe disability.
  • There were 2,746 children aged 0-14 years who needed assistance in one or more of the three core activity areas of self-care, mobility and communication, because of a disability or long-term health condition (lasting six months or more).
