Key statistics
These statistics relate to City of Gold Coast families and children.
Household composition
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census of Population and Housing:
- Family households formed 71 per cent of all households in the city, which equates to 145,416 families
- 25,027 were one parent families with children (17.2 per cent of families)
- 57,379 were couple families without children (39.5 per cent of families)
- 60,903 were couple families with children (41.9 per cent of families).
Age structure and distribution (children 0-14 years)
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2019 Regional population by age and sex data:
- The number of children in City of Gold Coast is increasing, with approximately 11,800 more children aged 0 to 14 years old compared to five years ago.
- Children aged 14 years and under formed 18.2 per cent of the city’s population.
- There were 36,070 children aged 0 to 4 years (5.8 per cent of the population).
- There were 38,814 children aged 5 to 9 years (6.3 per cent of the population).
- There were 38,002 children aged 10 to 14 (6.1 per cent of the population).
- A high percentage of families with children live in the north of the city.
Education (children 0–14 years)
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census of Population and Housing:
- 7,553 children were attending preschool on the Gold Coast.
- 43,802 children were attending primary school.
Disability and need for assistance
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census of Population and Housing:
- 1600 Gold Coast children aged 0 to 9 years old had a profound or severe disability.
- There were 2,746 children aged 0–14 years who needed assistance in one or more of the three core activity areas of self-care, mobility and communication, because of a disability or long-term health condition (lasting six months or more).
The next Census will be conducted by the ABS in August 2021.
