Willow Vale – Denham Circuit detention basin restoration works

Commencing: March 2021
Completion: June 2021 (weather permitting)
Cost: $788,000

Project information

The City of Gold Coast maintains over 450 Water Sensitive Urban Design devices as part of an ongoing upgrade and renewal program. These devices improve the quality and control the flow of stormwater run-off into the city’s creeks and channels.

The detention basin at Denham Circuit in Willow Vale is showing signs of deterioration and requires renewal. We will be undertaking work to restore the basin’s embankment and floor to avoid further erosion and piping issues. Piping is the result of soil movements caused by rainfall events. This creates open spaces beneath the ground’s surface and increases the risk that the basin wall may fail during a significant weather event.

The maintenance and upgrade work will improve the functionality of the detention basin and further minimise the risk of flooding in the area.

Construction details

Works include:

  • earthworks and excavation of the basin’s eroded areas
  • stabilising existing material and placement of a geofabric layer to prevent further erosion
  • backfilling the excavated areas with controlled, impermeable stabilised fill
  • reinstatement of vegetation across the basin floor and batter.

Construction activities will take place between the hours of 7.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Traffic changes will include temporary lane closures of Denham Circuit during construction to allow machinery to enter and exit the site. Local residential property access will be maintained at all times.

We will be working to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum. However, local residents may experience temporary construction noise, vibrations and dust at times.

Thank you for your patience during these works.

Community benefits

Benefits of this project include:

  • improved safety and functionality of the detention basin
  • reduced flood risk to the local area during rainfall events
  • overall increase in water quality received at Hotham Creek
  • reduced ongoing maintenance requirements and costs.
